Well, I finally brought my SHO in for that dreaded ticking sound. It has 116,000 kms on it and has been getting louder for the last 15,000. I work at the local Canadian Tire in my town, in the parts department. I know all the mechanics and know my share about cars. So I bring my car in and start removing the rear valve cover, all's well and dosen't look like anythings wrong back there. We remove the front cover and BAM! one loose sprocket, just a little movement in it. Anyways it's the front exaust cam and it's way more noticeable when the engine is warm. Now to check the intake does the slave chain have to be off, cause theres no way with that much tension on the sprocket that you can tell if it's lose. To change the exhaust cam, or cams, do you have to pull the engine out, because of the location of all the chain tensioners. My garage manager anyways is gonna try to get me two exhaust cams because of the probability that these are the ones that fail more frequently. Total cost so far was quoted at 4 grand(can) without labour. Also we had the covers off i decided to replace theplugs, since were there and it only takes twenty minutes. Is there anything else that I should consider doing since everythings apart. THANKS!!!

Came back from the garage today, and they don't know whats going on. They called my warranty and they want a little of information on the cam problem. They might consider having my car towed toToronto and have someone install pins instead of of paying the outrageous amount to possibly replace all four. they'll be getting back to me later, so i'll post again. Later!!

You can also expect to wait about 5 months (yes, up to 5 months) for replacement cams from Ford. The mechanic at the dealership who swapped out my motor offered that interesting tale. To tell you the truth, I don't know if you can pin a loose cam sprocket. Even if the sprocket is just moving a tiny bit, the onlything holding it still would be the pin. I'd think you'd eventually have to weld at least the faulty sprocket to ensure that it doesn't move.

I couldn't tell you if the motor has to be dropped in order to swap out the cams. Getting to the timing chain cover is the trick and there ain't a whole helluva lot of room in there. I got the intake cam out pretty easy on my old motor. I'll have to see how difficult the exhaust cam would be.

well, just got word from the warranty company. What a load of BS, my maximum claim is only $2500. The only thing i can replace is the faulty cam, and that and parts with labour will still come above that amount. I'm on my way to a welding shop to see if they can weld the cams on the car. This i'm hoping will prevent any other such recourance. I'm guessing this is the only problem with these motors right? and welding the cams should give me some piece of mind that my engine should not fail. I was also wondering, on the throttle body it says do not clean butterfly, I could clean that and my runners can't I. THANKS

if you have a powertrain warranty, they should cover ALL claims. File a suit in small claims court. They'll soften up. Do it today, they'll get served the papers and say they'll cover your engine Monday.
