This is a know failure on some gen 2 shos. Ford has a recall that just involves putting a housing around the spring to prevent it from causing other damage (instead of just replacing the spring.) I wouldn’t drive on it if I were you.

Both of the front springs on my 95 broke so it is not uncommon.

A busted spring will cut out a tire sidewall. This is the only reason there is a recall.

This has got to be an east coast (read: rust) thing...my '95 had original great springs at 160k, and I have never seen or heard of a Taurus on this coast breaking a spring. I sure feel bad for the cars that have to go through that crap.

mine, AFAIK, are stock, and still have great height to them, and still very "firm"... compared to other shos that have worn springs that i have rode in....

When the law suits become a burden, only then is there a recall. Just ask the V8cam guys. Its economics.

I have seen several broken Taurus/SHO springs. Rust does not seem to be a factor as a couple of them had the breaks in a clean section of the spring. Likewise, I have seen many springs in severe degrees of rust that worked fine. A little weak maybe, but still plenty springie with no breakie.
