I have a '92 with the front brake "upgrade".

The left front spindle shaft snapped at the first thread.

Has anyone else here experienced this?

Define 'spindle shaft.'

If you are talking about the pinch bolt that attaches the knuckle to the strut, start drilling the rest of the bolt out!

Ah sorry. Was in my Mustang, Pantera, thinking mode when I posted that.

It is actually the threaded end of the axle that snapped where it presses against the wheel bearing in the hub.

The axle snapped? Was this while you were taking the nut on/off, or while you were driving it? I haven't heard of that before....

I was driving it. changing lanes at speed. 80 ish. I've never heard of this before either.

Won't know if it took the wheel bearing with it till I pull it apart. The rotor definitely needs to be resurfaced.

NOT a comforting thought that I could snap the axle at the nut at all.

I forgot how to post pictures here. Every forum is different in that regard.

The wheel bearing is most likely destroyed. Without the axle nut holding the hub back it'll want to pull out of the bearing, especially with all the forces happening at 80mph.

I think that even if it isn't it would be a great idea to change it for safety sake at this point?

I'm wondering what caused this situation and there may be other culprits involved.

So far I'm the only one I've heard of snaping an axle. Must be the SHO Nut tri-flow cam power?:)

so you're looking for a new CV joint? and a bearing as a precaution.

any idea how many times that axle nut has been removed and re-torqued? (or new nut installed)

It is on it's fourth clutch. Second set of axles. New nuts each time.
New bearings when the 94 hubs and 96 brakes went on. 119,000 on the car.

One thing that we did notice is that the axles on our SVT Contours are larger.

It might be worthwhile at this point to see how difficult a swap over that would be to do. That's just a thought at this point though.

The Tokico front struts went on at 103,000 and really seem to be dead at this point.

SHO nut is the only other one I can find who has broken the axle like this.

He recommended the forged steel racing axles. They are just a little expensive at $1,100 a pair.

The bearing was also gone. Don't know which one caused the other. About 12,000 miles on the bearing and axle. Must be the tri-flo SHO Nut cams? :p

I have broken a few at the drags with slicks before. Shot one off onto the grass with the nut still attached. It made it farther off the line than I did!
