How hard is it to replace the cams?

first time cam swap vs engine swap ..... probably about equal IF that head isnt damaged. If that bearing surface is scratched you just tore down the top end of an engine that has to come out anyways

id rather just swap engines and pull apart the broken engine in my free time

cam swap is way way easier than an engine swap! all you do is pull intake, pull valve covers, remove bearing caps and chain tensioner and the cams come out.

the last ones I swapped had the same valve clearances after the swap that it did prior to the swap.

The fracture is external to the bearing and should not have affected it. A cam swap would be a simpler possibility.

pull the cam cap nearest the break and see if its scored or beaten up at all. I would hate to slap cams in it just to have a bad bearing surface eat the replacement cam for me.
