I was looking to possibly tint my windows and I was wondering if anybody knew of a good brand of tint I could buy. Is the tint at Auto Zone any good? Also, is there any place online that sells the tint cheapest.

I also know that it may be somewhat difficult to do it. I still want to give it a try.

Thanks

my '93 has 3M tinting. I have no idea where you'd find it as I had that car done professionaly. But if I were you I wouldn't be on a search for the cheapest tint, tint itselft isn't much, and a quality tint won't discolor.

Yeah. I was looking for a good brand that won't discolor. There was a brand on ebay that i could have gotten cheap but i read it discolors after a little while.

solarguard has always been good.... but i havent messed with tint in 5 years, they may not be around anymore....for the best, i'd go to the most reputable tint place in your town and ask what brand they use.....

I had 3M's top model installed by a local shop. My mother has Lumar I think on her car. Either way they are about the same. I think most of the difference is in installation. Clean windows and a clean environment are absolutely necessary.

Just have someone tint it for you, IMHO self installed tint usually looks like garbage..

But some people have pulled it off.

Oh yea, and that autozone stuff aint too bad..I used it on my taillights

YES! "SOLARGARD" That's the best!!! I know tint, stay the **** away from the cheap stuff. Like from parts stores or wherever...

If you put cheep tint on, it's not as clean/clear looking out. When you have the good stuff, solargard on. It's like it's not even there when you look through it from the inside.

It all looks the same from the outside. It's from the inside that you can see what the difference is.

The real good tint don't come in tiny do it yourself rolls. It comes on a big one. For the professional. It's time consuming. Like auto body. You can always do it yourself.

SolarGard is still available www.solargard.com They do office towers, and residents too. It depends on the installer/shop. They will have a locater on the site.

If you want to try to do tint. You should. Nothing wrong with doing it yourself. It's practice. The problem is the crap they sell to the small guy consumer. A shop might sell the good stuff to you buy the foot. If you know people, but if you can't tint, never have, don't know what to do... Make arrangements for installation.

3M has a site, but I don't see auto tint. Good company, but nothing like Solar Gard. 3M is behind.

I might try and get 3M or SolarGard. Now to just find a place that sells it. Also does anybody have a picture of their car with 50% or 35% tint?

Thanks

If you don't even know anything about 3M's film, how can you say they are behind?
Here's my car with 20-something percent in the rear and 35% (I think) in the front. Just about right IMO.

35% looks good, but the only thing that is really keeping me from getting it is the fact that 35% isnt legal on the front windows.(Where I live) I would get 50% in the front and 35% in the back, it's just that I dont know if it would look ackward. K-Dawg, your tint looks good.

Maybe I'll just get 35% all around. I still got to find somewhere that sells it though.:corn:

I saw that, the only thing is that I kind of wanted extra in case I mess up. I may do that because that would be simple and its already fitted. It is also the solargard brand. If I can't find the solargard tint elsewhere, then I think i may do that.

both 3m and solargard are equally good. i use both brands in my shop. make sure you get a film that has a "metallic" tint (i don't mean like chrome mirrored) - metallic as in the tint uses a metallic element in the film to reduce the amount of light coming in. this reduces the chances of it wearing out/turning purple faster. i say get 35% all around as it is just dark enough in the day so people can't see you picking your nose and just light enough for the cops to see you aren't up to something *****. also i find any percentage less than 35 at nite is waaaaay too dark to see anything other than road/head lights and you will find yourself hitting curbs on left turns as you might not be able to see them thru the tint unless they are very well lit.

as for the self install, i say go for it. the film is cheap and you save tons in labor costs. but be careful though as it is very easy to rip/tear. also if you mess up a piece on your back window, when you try to take it off it may make some of your rear defroster lines unusable as the adhesive peels off parts of the thin line to the defroster with it. best tip i can give you is make sure everything is really wet - as in like wet down with a hose. makes it very easy to position and less prone to mistakes. if you need specific tips let me know.

what do people usually do wrong when they do it themselves and it comes up crappy, i think it may have something to do with the adhesive or something, i just hate how it bubbles up...what you could do is do the side windows but leave the rear one up to a pro

I thought of that. Any ideas how much just the rear may cost? I might give it a try or two and if I can't get it then I may do that.
