The rear brakes on my 91 are making that &@!%#$ grinding, rotor crunching sound again! shoot

My question being, that upon visual inspection, the right rear pad has plenty of meat on it, but the left rear has zero pad left, and is cutting into the rotor face itself, in a striping pattern!

Why would only one side crap out? I'd expect them to go in pairs? Can I use those $20 rotors from Autozone that Sdpatt and others rave about on the back with som c/m pads? Will they last any longer? Seems like this car eats up brakes faster than my 3 year old and a bucket of Halloween candy!

Sounds like the piston may be hanging up on the left side causing the uneven wear. IMHO, spend the $$$ for a reman pair of calipers, new rotors and the PFCM pads and you shouldn't have to worry about the rear brakes for 100K+ miles. You should be able to do it all for around $100.

You have a couple of possibilities.

1. A piston is stuck in the caliper and keeping the brake pad pressed against the disk.

2. An emergency brake cable is not fully releasing and keeping the brake pads pressed against the disk.

It is also possible that a combination of 1 and 2 is causing the untimely demise of your rear brake pads on one side.

Replaceing the disk and pads will be a short term fix if the problem is not corrected. rangerj

Check your slider pins. My were frozen solid on one side and just barely moving on the other. You can clean them up, re-grease them (use brake grease) and put them back on it the rubber jackets are still good. The e-brake is the other possibility, my rear drivers side is hanging up, but my passenger side is fine.

Rangerj is correct, find the problem or will experience the same problem again.

Good Luck :)

Thanx guys,

I just had the calipers replaced with remans about 10-14 months ago! shoot

The E-brake cable is also new, about 3-4 months! shoot

I think that I'll look for another mechanic. Sounds like my old one is a tool

my driveway is on a hill, so jacking the car up to DIY is a PITA!

Check the boots on the slider pins for tears. If torn, the slider pins will need to be replaced with the caliper repair kit with two pins and two boots from Ford for about $21. If the holes that the pins insert into are rusted out, you will need to replace the caliper bracket too.

SHOooo- where can you find calipers, pads, and rotors for under $100?
