I have a 1992 MTX with 108k and I'm in the middle of the 60k and we ran into a problem.

We tore it down and installed the new timing belt, water pump and gasket, and put a new CPS in, but some how when I wasn't looking, the bottom timing belt pulley got one of the vanes bent out of shape.

I tried to bend it back but I'm not sure if I got it perfect. I'm assuming that it needs to be perfect because of the gapping of the CPS to the vanes.

We gapped it with one of the good vanes and put the new timing belt on with all the marks lined up.

We then bolted down the crossover tube and connected the DIS module. We tried to start but the car just cranks and won't start. With the key on and engine off the tach registers 500 rpms then when you begin to crank it it goes down to zero and it shutters like normal while it cranks. We think it it is the CPS and the "bent" vane.

Any suggestions please because I hate not being able to drive my SHO.

I'm afraid you already know the probable cause of the problem. Did you check the gap to the CPS on all three vanes? Epecially the bent one?

No I didn't check the gap on all three. What do you think I can do about it. Do I have to replace anything or you think I'll be okay.

Thanks

As long as the 'bent' vane does not make any physical contact with any part of the sensor, you're okay.

The actual gap is not critical, the greatest concern is to avoid contact between the sensor elements and the vanes.

It is possible to test the function of the CPS with a meter. I've got notes somewhere that I wrote a month or two about on how to test it. Try a search on "square wave".

Actually, FWIW, I have seen a bent vane problem cause a CPS issue before, but only once. Couldn't really explain it, but replacing the bent vane with another one worked. Perhaps the fluctuation in the mag field with varying gaps does affect the sensor somehow - I'm not sure. I would hazard a guess something's not connected - double check the cam sensor, crank sensor connection, etc.

Good luck with your problem.

Same thing happened to me on my 89 mtx doin a partial 6ok. i checked like a hundred places for it .obsolete. i brought it to a place that re manu s heads and whatever to see if they could bend it back right and off the bat he knew what it was and told me it had to be perfect he said it wouldnt run right. long story short i ordered a new one from an online junkyard with all my timing covers for 140. not bad though i forget who had it not many people wanted to take one off. if you want the number e mail me or post again ill try to help [email protected]

An easier way to tell if the CPS sensor is working is to watch the CEL - if it goes out while cranking the PCM is picking up the PIP signal. When they fail the light will stay lit. wink

It appears my CPS has gone south on my SHO. What is a reasonable amount of time for replacing it to be done in? I am mechanically ********, plus lack some of tools needed for this job, so I will have to take it in somewhere.

It showed signs of going out awhile back, so I called the ford dealership (yeah yeah, probably the worst place to check) and was quoted something like $300-$400 in labor as a guesstimate, which seemed a bit much to me. That would be 6-8 hrs labor, I think.
