I just installed the SHO Source cat back exhaust with Borla mufflers in my '89 and want to install some Borla exhaust tips.

Does any one know the kind of tips that came with the aftermarket Borla exhaust system for the Gen 1 SHO?

I've just looked at the Summit catalog to see the tips Borla offers.

Has anyone tried any other Borla tips and can you comment on the fit with the SHO's unusual rear bumper?

I'm not so interested in aesthetics but something that fits and works well with the SHO. The Borla tips supposedly mellow out the exhaust sound a bit and I wanted to see how that sounds.

Thanks.

The Gen 1 Borla kit has turn downs. No tips until the Gen 2 kit was released.

I didn't see any turndowns for Borla in the Summit catalog. I'll try JEG's and Borla's website.

Are there differences in the rear bumper between Gen 1 and Gen 2 bodies such that the tips for Gen 2 cars would not fit properly on Gen 1's?

Thanks

I think the turn downs were the "intercooled tips" on the Gen 1.
No, they're just turn downs.

I have the Gen 1 Borla catback on my car. They come out of the muffler, and turn down.

The Gen 2 kit has the intercooled tips.

Nice looking wheels on that green SHO. I liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike it!

The Borla straight tips I've seen - oval, rectangular, duo, etc are intercooled also. I'll look for the turndowns.

Thanks.

The tips from my borla are just regular round chromed tips.
Would these be for your '89? Do they bump up against the bumper in order for them to exit? If they did would that be OK? The 2.5" turndowns I use now (one fell off!) mellow the sound a bit. My mufflers sit up somewhat high and one turndown just barely clears the bumper without hitting the bumper.

Since the Borla straight round tips have a 4" outlet they may bump up against the bumper.

Were they the weld on type?

The following is from the Borla catalog.

Tip # Description Inlet Outlet Length Installation Part #
1 Single Round 2” 3.5 RD 4.25” Weld On 20238
2 Single Round Rolled Edge 2.5” 4” RD 8” Weld On 20235
3 Single Round Rolled Edge Angle Cut 2.25” 3.19” RD 5” Weld On 20236
4 Single Round Rolled Angle Cut Intercooled 2.25” 3.5” 6.5” Weld On 20237
Single Round Rolled Angle Cut Intercooled 3” 4.25” 4” Weld On 20251
6 Single Round Rolled Intercooled 2. 25” 3.5” RD 6.63” Weld On 20254
8 Single Round Half Rolled Angle Cut Phantom 2” 3.5” RD 6” Weld On 20239
9 Single Round Angle Cut 2.25” 2.25” RD 6” Set Screw Included 20106
Single Round Angle Cut 2.5” 2.5” RD 6” Set Screw Included 20107
10 Single Round Angle Cut Intercooled 2.5” 3.5” RD 9” Set Screw Included 20120
Single Round Angle Cut Intercooled 3” 3.5” RD 9” Set Screw Included 20122
11 Single Round Angle Cut Phantom Embossed 2.5” 4” RD 11” Weld On 20240
12 Single Round Intercooled 2” 2.5” RD 6” Set Screw Included 20102
Single Round Intercooled 2.25” 2.5” RD 6” Set Screw Included 20103
Single Round Intercooled 2.5” 2.5” RD 6” Set Screw Included 20104

What does the "set screw" mean? The non-welded tips are not held into the exit of the turbo muffler with clamps?

I assume you have tip#2 - Single Round Rolled Edge, 2.5"inlet, 4"RD (round) outlet, weld-on.

Can you attach the weld-on type w/clamps? I don't know how to weld. And what if you want to experiment with trying different tips?

Also, w/o the turndowns on my mufflers (i.e. straight out exhaust) the sound is a little louder than w/ the turndowns. I like the mellower sound. So I assume that same would be for the turndown tips vs the straight out tips.

I would appreciate any comments you can make.

Thanks

The set screw is the non-weld on type and they are held by a set screw. You should be able to hold on the weld on types with clamps.

You can have a muffler shop weld them on.

If you want to experiment you need to find a shop with a bunch of tips and try them out.

There are such muffler shops that they have a supply of Borla tips to try? I haven't seen that in the past, but I'll start paying attention and look for one!

Thanks.

If the mufflers are up where they should be (so that you don't see much of them), then you need a possibly custom-made turn down at a muffler shop with a bending machine. On my gen 1, I used flowmaster 40 series mufflers because they were short (I think original SHO length) and allowed enough room to get a bend in before it hit the bumper.
But that is the goal.... to get the mufflers up so you don't see them and all you see are the turn down tips.
The gen 2s have a different shaped rear cross over pipe and the mufflers have a drop in them to get the "intercooled" tips to come out in the right spot. You can't swap rear piping and muffler parts between gen1 and 2.
You can't have both.
And the no muffler look, with just the turn downs is the nicest by far.

Yes, the '89. Can't remember, but I think the touched bumper, were atleast very close and they stuck out past. Bought car with it already on and didn't like the look, mostly because it doesn't look right as It's obvious there shouldn't be exhaust sticking out like that, so I cut them off almost immediately after getting car. They were welded on, prob #2 on your list. Still have them laying around somewhere.

Probably not but they probably have a large selection of tips. If you want to "test" them that is the only way you can do it.

Tips probably wont affect sound very much.
