Hey Fred, thanks very much...can you briefly explain why/how a bent fork would cause that popping out of gear>> I thought that the fork and TOB were kind of a separate issue that whatever holds the gears together after you drop the clutch?? I mean, how would a bent fork cause first gear to pop out back to neutral position??
tks,
AT

the bent shift fork will cause the gear not to be fully engaged, so easy to slip out.

the transmissions are constant mesh - all the gears are in contact with their mating gears at all times. the gears are engaged when the shift fork slips the shift collar over the syncro blocking ring to engage a particular gear by locking that particular gear to the shaft. the syncro has a detent to hold the shift collar in the 'engaged' position. the actual length of engagement is only about 1/4" so if the shift fork is bent and does not fully engage, then the detent is not engaged so its easy to slip out of gear, and it does not have to move far at all for the gear to disengage.

this is much easier to show when pointing at the right parts on a half-disassembled tranny, but I don't have any such photos or video. there is likely something on YouTube though, if you search.

thanks very much Fred, with the little knowledge I DO have, I can understand what you've described here...and...you are talking about bent the trans housing correct? or did you mean bent visibly where the clutch cable is connected??

no, inside the transmission - the shift fork is the thing that slides the shift collar back and forth to engage either 1st or 2nd (one shift fork), 3rd or 4th (second shift fork), or 5th (third shift fork).

since yours is popping out of first, the suspicion is that the 1/2 shift fork is bent.

Once again Fred, thank you for your expertise. I was thinking of the fork that pushes the TO bearing to the clutch/pressure plate assembly. I'm going to have a chance to do some further investigating this weekend i hope

Have you checked the shift linkage? My linkage bushings wore out, bending one of the shift rods, and I had similar noise and shifting issues. I didn't heed the issues and finally broke a shift rod! :salute:

I've replaced my linkage with another one that I replaced all the bushings on. I also had the plate inside the box under the shifter rod split in half years ago. just other sloppy things to check but not high on my list of what I think is wrong with yours. Also my ceramic TOB rattles like rocks in blender but works great.

Everything here has gone to idle...My dad died this morning, so I'm going out east for a week. When I get back I'll need some good distraction so I might dig into the tranny or start replacing the corroded window frames that I got replacements for this summer at the jy.
Sad times for a bit here,

thank you guys for your loving thoughts and prayers. We're taking it one day at a time here and there's still a lot to do. He was a crazy old coot with a huge heart, but so many details and stuff. He didn't play "by the rules" of society in general, but made his own way through it all, so there's a lot of business and crap to straighten out, and now Mom who is 87 is failing as well, She's here in the host getting tests yet this evening. When it rains, it pours,
Thanks again and ...soon,
T
