As the topic says, after I changed my valve cover and spark plug seals, I gave it a test drive around the block. When I pulled back in the garage, smoke came billowing out from under the hood. It looked like I was leaking oil from the right ( passenger side ) rear corner of the engine. To say the least, I was not pleased!! Even though I had been working on the car for at least half the day, I took it apart again and inspected the valve cover gasket. I didn't see any obvious signs that it had slipped out of the groove, like big crimp marks or a place where it was flat , but the back cover has so much CRAP interfering with it, just pulling it off knocked the gasket part way off. I have to believe that the gasket came loose during the install.

How can I keep it in place while I fight with the b.s. on the back side of the motor ? Is there any other reason for it to leak ?

Use some cord or light rope to hold back the stuff in the way. Rotate the heater hose clamp out of the way if needed, tighten up when done. After the cover drops into place, pull it back up a bit and feel back there to see if the gasket is still in the groove.
