In the HVAC system there is a unit called a Blowe Control Module that has a diode soldered to a finned heatsink. It goes right under the blower wheel. I pulled mine out and washed out all of the gunk, but it is still pretty ugly. Is this something that never goes bad?

It most definitely goes bad. It happens all the time, and they're usually just replaced with a working used unit. If the fan or blower seems to be stuck on high all the time, it's going to be the BCM 99% of the time.
