Doors might fit. Its been a few since I looked at my Gen4, kind of put that project to the side with the SHO's in the driveway. The panels are not as deep on the Gen4 as the Gen3, so you might get a bit more room.

My thinking was if you used a gen 4 dash you could put in a nice big double din touch screen stereo

How? Can you get the climate control to work with another unit? The stereo and climate control electronics are integrated in the round unit in the dash.

Theoretically it could work if the units both use the same ACP to talk to the ACCM/EATC. Not sure if they changed firmwares, but in theory would be backwards compatible. I'd stay away from 2006+ versions as they changed from the standard Ford communications network to CAN based communications. Not a bad thing, just not backwards compatible.

If I had the time I'd work on the Arduino interface for the ACCM. That would solve 90% of the aftermarket issues with being able to control the A/C apart from the OEM football.

Though depending on how you intend to use the stereo, you could get an FM modulator like the iSimple or Scosche, and connect via bluetooth (may require a bluetooth to RCA dongle depending on model you choose). This works to either provide an AUX or bluetooth streaming from your portable device. The TruBlu iSimple has the full hands free setup with MIC.

If you need CD's, I think at this point you would need to replace the head unit. Don't know of anyone with a working rear changer anymore...

Wiring diagrams
Have you looked at this? I installed a single DIN in the storage pocket and ran new wiring to just eliminate the stereo portion. You could splice into the oem wiring for sure but I could not remove the climate control unit. I'm not sure it's doable without really good electronics skills and more time to figure it out than I could ever devote to reconfigure the whole thing. After owning one, I'd get into another vehicle before I tried that. This issue and the transmission got me away from GenIII's. Everything else I really liked about the car.

If the Gen4 EATC was compatible I could see this working. From what I have seen of the ACCM modules is the same basic code through the years. At certain points there would be a major revision. So in theory as long as the head unit had the EATC and vacuum lines in the right places it should work.

Keeping in mind that you would likely need to transfer the amplifier as well, as I believe this controls the head unit and would continually want to talk to the cassette player causing parasitic drain....

That would be true to keep the original stereo operating, but it looks like he wants an aftermarket double DIN head unit in his GenIII SHO fitting it in there by swapping in the GENIV Taurus dash along with the other Taurus climate control face. I don't remember what those years cc stereo setup looked like but I do remember researching and coming up with plans that kept getting scrapped and messing with the SHO setup was a killer for me. Too much wasted time.

If this works no one would be happier to hear it got solved than me.
