*edit- I am talking about the intake ports that lead into the combustion chamber that are visible when the intake manifold is removed*

I am in the proces of doing my 60k and have the manifold pulled off. There is TONS of gunk in there. I can scrape it out with my finger. I've gotten the big stuff out by using a rag and my fingers. I also used some carb cleaner like the SHO phoenix write up suggested. Does anyone know any other methods to help get that junk out? Also, Should I be concerned at all that after spraying the carb cleaner all of the shit caked on in there has just settled on the bottom of the port and is going to get sucked into the engine? Also, I think I may have pushed some of the junk into the fuel injector while i was scraping my fingers up the side, will the fuel pressure push it out of the way? Ill try to wipe it off the best I can.

About 15 cans of carb cleaner, Berrymans 12 (I pour it in the runners and let it sit) small wire brushes from walmart (in the paint section) and paper towels. And lots of time. Prepare to get messy.

Your best bet is to disassemble the intake, its much easier to clean that way.
After you get most of the crap out,you can run the pieces through a cycle in your dishwasher,it does wonders.
Then reassemble with new gaskets, chances are it has never been done and could use it.

I'm talking about the ports that lead down into the combustion chamber, not the intake manifold.

I used a parts cleaner, and the new sho I used carb cleaner, the best bet is to take it apart and replace the old gasket's and whatnot. If it's been hardend in there for a while you should let it soak in and put a alien wreach in there to make a hole

i find a pea sized ball of plastic explosives does wonders for cleaning all that out...but seriously, just keep doing what you're doing. try not to let too much fall into the cylinders, but a little ain't gonna hurt much.

A good way to clean out the intake with it on and the car running is to hook one of the vacuum lines up to a can of Seafoam. It will sputter and smoke like all get-out but it will clean the intake ports and valves out. As long as you use the small vacuum line that goes to the canister purge solenoid, you shouldn't suck in enough at once to hydro-lock the engine. IIRC, you are supposed to run some water through as well through the same vacuum line to clean out the seafoam. Not a large amount. I want to say the procedure used to be on the SHOTimes website, but I'm not sure any more.

I scraped out as much as a could in the heads and the vacuumed it out. Then sprayed it down with carb cleaner and wiped some, but that didn't do much. Car was hard to start afterwards, and smoked enough to **** all of the mosquitoes.

some tubing, like the brass stuff at a hobby shop, taped to a vacuum cleaner hose will remove and extricate most of the gunk inside the heads without damaging anything. you can even clean the back sides of the valves with a custom shaped tube. DON'T suck up flamable solvents with a vacuum, as the air stream passes thru the vacuums motor to cool it where sparks from the brushes can ignite the fumes.
