I have upgrded to 96' brake set up but, the pads are to small from the '95. ford tells me that the same size pad fits the 95 to 99 SHO. but i know that pad is 601. so what is the best pad for a aggressive driver with occassional street racing. What is the best 598 pad for this type of driving? Are these two any good?

OEM Ford NOT Motorcraft. Little dusting, last 50k or so, don't fade or squeel and are good for the occasional track day.

I'm very happy with the Raybestos PGD598QS ceramic pads.

I put them on this summer and found them to be the best pads I've ever had on any car. Very little dusting (and the dust is a much lighter tan color than the black from some pads -- and it wasn't really visible until I had gone about a month without washing the car), and no discernable fade when hot. The only thing I can't speak to is racing since I don't race. They've also been great over the last several rainy weekends we've had here in N.E.

I paid $74.99 for them at Pep Boys.

I believe PFCM makes a 598 size now. John H. posted he saw it listed in the 2003 catalog, apparantly they were loosing out on the market with the newer tarui using the same brakes. So guess you have a $30 alternative at autozone if you don't mind a little dust. Good pad for the $$ (have used other sizes).

sunny San Juan Bautista,
I'm curious if the $40 Hawk HPS pads would work well on the 90 brake upgrade or if the OEM Ford pads would still be best for that application.

I've been petitioning Performance Friction to make a 598 pad monthly for the past year. They've never once answered my emails.

Glad to see they're actually being made.

I like the KVR pads for street stopping power, but they're very dusty. I preferred the PFCM before switching to the 96 upgrade on my 95.

I first had a set of used panther pads which i loved for stopping. But they fell apart so i went with the ceramic pads for less dusting. If you don't mind the dusting and squeaking the panther pads are a must. Their are pads on tirerack.com that are made of kevlar i might try those out next because i don't like the ceramic ones.

Hawk supplied the material to Carbotech for both his "F" street pads and some of his Panther Pads. I run the CarboTech "F" D598 pads when I had the '96 front brakes and really liked them. Not sure whose material he is using now. I have also used the Raybestos PG Plus metallic pads (comperable the the Ford OE pads) and Brute Stop pads (nice and agressive but very dusty).

I asked the product manager at Hawk about added the D598 pad size in at least the HPS and possibly the HP Plus material. We will see if he does or not.

And yes Performance Friction has finally added the D598 pad in both their Ceramic and Carbon Metallic materials. They aren't planning on making a D598 pad in the Z Performance material as of yet.

carbotech has a new panther plus compound, less dusting and talking. i really enjoyed the stopping power of my old panthers, but first stop of the day, there was no heat and they were a little slow. but that was only in the am, after my sho sat over night. iam running the hawk hps and it is definately a downgrade from carbotech in terms of stopping ability. if the panther plus compounds are really less dusting, that would be a hot setup. i have the 96 upgrade on my 94, all 94-95s should upgrade, very simple and more brake swept area. but just remember there is many other variables that effect stoppping ability. brake fluid, brake lines, how much airflow is going to your brake disc/caliper, suspension and probably most important tires. the compound of the tires, the size(treadwidth and sidewall height), air pressure. the best upgrade that you can do for better braking and better handling and better acceleration is good tires. a performance tire, not a touring tire. to accurately compare braking ability everything needs to be the same. to bleed my brakes i use the russell speedbleeders, very easy to bleed by one person (they have a bleeder screw with a check valve that operates when you open the screw about 1/4-1/2 turn) you should bleed your brakes at least once a year, more if your sho is in a humid environment. and upgrade your brakes before you upgrade your engine, we have more than enough power to over power stock brakes, no matter what year. brakes can and will save you!! three cheers for brakes!!!

I dunno, I did a panic stop from about 85 MPH tonight, and then got back up to 50 and hit them again, I was surprised to find I still had brakes(OEM brakes). Of course, I have the best of the gen 1-2 brakes, and the 96 upgrade will be completed when I manage to wear these brakes out.
