Using a drift to shift through all the gears, if I twist the drift into "B" it slides over and engages, so all thats neccessary is to pull the shift shaft to get into 5th, or push to go into reverse. This transmission never had a reverse/5th kickdown spring, so I'm thinking thats normal.

However, when I go to twist the shift shaft into position "A" it bounces back into "N" and does not engage. Is this Normal because of the 3/4 Bias spring? Or is it supposed to engage similar to 5th / reverse ? Aside form that I can shift into all gears fine.

Your diagram is backwards. Thats the pattern for the shifter, but not the shift shaft.

There's a pivot in there, remember. When you push the shifter handle, it pulls the shift shaft out.

I'm pretty sure that's normal. I would be willing to bet that the reason the shifter doesn't stay in the 1-2 "lane" is that it wants to keep you from accidentally shifting into 2nd from 3rd, or - even worse - 1st from 4th. So you have to use force to keep it in the lower two gears, and the shifter just kinda naturally pops into the 3-4 lane when shifting from 2nd.

Weird.

The transmission that's in my car now seems to stay in the 1-2 lane and feels as though it clicks firmly in place.

Maybe its one of the rare transmission that has a 5th / reverse kickdown spring.
