the battery light comes off and on blinks, stays for a few seconds and it only happens when i first start to drive the car, very rarely after i have been driving it for awhile, could it be the battery or alternator

There is a 1 wire clip that clips onto the alternator. When corrosion gets into this connection, it can cause the problem you describe. This wire "controls" the battery light.

Unclip it, clean it, and re-clip it...see if that helps.

FWIW, it' actually a two wire terminal. one wire goes to the battery to monitor battery voltage and to control the voltage regulator; the other one goes to the battery via the instrument cluster; if the battery voltage is higher than alternator voltage, the light comes on. I agree though, it sounds like you're having connector/continuity issues.

P.S. on ATXes it's a three wire connector, but the middle wire just terminates in the harness - it doesn't go anywhere.

If the clip/wire is well attached/good connection , well it's alternator rebuild time.

I would take it to an advance auto/autozone and get the charging system tested. They do it for free.
