well this has been happening for a while now....i'll be driving down the road and all of a sudden the battery light will start blinking and flashing alot, sometimes it will even stay on for a few minutes. I don't really think it's a charging problem. could it be a short or malfunction??

Why do you think it is not a charging problem? It could very well be a charging deficiency. Why not just check the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine stopped and with the engine idling? The voltage should be 12.0V-12.5V with the engine not running and aboiut 13.0-13.5V with the engine idling. Voltages lower than those could be an indication of faulty alternator or loose connections on the battery terminals or the alternator. It could also be the case of worn brushes on the alternator.

Although Scott could be dead on, I had a problem just like this. It turned out that the little 1 wire clip that plugs into the alternator was loose. I pulled it off, shot some carb cleaner in the end, and plugged it back in.

No battery light since. Mine would come on...stay on for 5 minutes...go off...then if I revved the car up to 4-5 grand it would flicker or go off/on.
