My guess is the belt simply wasn't quite tight enough.. 
Don't feel bad.. I've had my SHO apart 1500 times... and the saga still continues.... (stupid strut rod bushings...)
But on the bright side... you got a pretty cool hobby now.. workin on a SHO..
