Very true. I've used both myself.Felt washers and dielectric grease/battery protection products remain invaluable tools to keeping the battery healthy.
I know a few people that swear by Costco batteries. I'm not sure who makes them but they seem to be decent. The economy Walmart batteries are junk but move up and they are no worse than any other brand.OEM battery lasted just over 5 years in northern IL. Failed to start SHO on NYE 2015 with temps around -10. With nothing else open on NY day I bought a Everstart MAXX from Walmart and thought I'd regret it. Yet, after over 2 years and inadvertently draining it twice, it still seems fine. I've got a Walmart standard battery in my GT500 that is 5 years old. Bought that one because Napa, Costco and O'Reilly did not have the correct size at the time I went shopping.
Fact is that there are only a few manufacturers that make standard lead acid batteries for North American automotive applications. IIRC: East Penn, Exide and Johnson Controls make most of them. Pretty certain the group 65 Walmart batteries are from Johnson Controls. Johnson Controls owns Optima. Interstate is a "marketer" who resells product from actual manufacturers. Bosch is now manufactured by Johnson Controls.
Of course, retailers have batteries made to spec and even within a specific brand there can be big differences relative to "group" or size. I've heard that Costco batteries are the best bang for the buck at this time. They seem to have changed suppliers a couple years ago.
Also, it is interesting to note that there are "south" and "north" batteries in each lineup and they are made a bit differently.
