Is there a way to clean them? The clearcoat stuff that seems to be on mine is peeling. I'm thinking of painting them black or chrome, but chrome might look sorta cheap. Any thoughts?

I`d say black, since it was an option on the basketweaves.Btw,i think it is commendable that you are trying to clean them up,rather than just looking for a set of slicers. If mine had originally came with the weaves,i`d keep them on there.

Is there any special way to do the black? I'd think to just sandblast them, then spray them with glossy black and add a clearcoat.

I was in the same predicament as you at the beginning of summer. I ended up using sandpaper and sanding as much as the rim as i could get to and I used the pink naval jelly to remove any and all rust. I then taped off the outer lip because i wanted to copy the black rims off the 90's and painted the inside black. I think I used like 6 or 7 coats to get it the way I liked it. I used engine paint to do this, but if I could go back again I would choose something a little glossier. After I finished that I sprayed the whole rim with a clearcoat paint for rims that I found at autozone. The results are below.

I`ve come across that problem before myself.Engine enamel is not as glossy as other paints in the black color.

Here's what I just did today :)
I removed all the clearcoat with a few good coats of Aircraft Stripper. then I sanded down all the rough spots with 350 then 400 grit sandpaper (still neeed to polish the lips ) and then I masked tehm and painted them over in a gloss black enamel, hope that helps.
