when I'm backing up in my 92, I sometimes hear a banging noise. sounds like it right under the shifter. something is hitting the floorboard. happens more when I let the clutch out a little hard. makes no noise in all foward gears. any ideas????

pete315, I seem to have the same problem in my car. Only when backing up and it also seems like only when I let up on the clutch a little too quick. On my car it doesn't happen too often but when it does, like every other month if that, it really concerns me. Makes a thumping clunk noise. I'm waiting to change my motor mounts anyways so when my Extreme MM's go in I'll see if it makes the noise again.

Some possibilites:

1. Rear motor mount
2. Subframe bushing bolts loose/bushings worn
3. Strut loose/damaged
4. Strut rod bushigns worn
5. Front wheel bearing(s)worn

NOTE: If the exhaust system is hitting the floorboards in reverse, either there was too little clearance to start with or the rear motor mount has failed.

I think the motor mounts are ok. with the E brake on, I let the clutch out harder than normal with the hood open in 1st gear, the engine rocks back., but very little. same in reverse. it sounds as if the shifter rods are slamming against the floorboard. there is a slight glossy mark on the black throttle cover and some marks on the right side intake, however it looks old. I wished the engine rocked back a lot, that would answer the question. I guess I'm gonna have to change the 2 motor mounts and the tranny mount.
