Paul/anyone,

Need help with ball joint removal. I replaced them last june and can't for the life of me remember what combination of press (Loan a tool from autozone) pieces I used. Anyone got suggestions on how they remove them.

Thanks
Curtis

A standard ball joint press (big ass c-clamp-like contraption) will do the job. To remove, you'll need the small cup on the top of the joint, and I usually use a deep 21mm impact socket over the stud to help with forcing it out. Because of the depth of the small cup, you'll only force it out about 80% of the way, but a good whack or two with a 6 lb. sledge on the bottom of the stud is all it usually takes to finish getting it out. To install, you can just place the open end of the tool right on top of the joint, and you'll want the deep cup on the bottom.

Also don't forget to remove the snap rings! I made that mistake once and what a pain in the neck that can be! :bonk:

Well we had tried for several hours last night and finally gave up. I was going to purchase the Ford OTC 8032 adapter this morning and my father-in-law had removed it this morning before I got out of bed (guess in-laws are good for something).

The press we got from autozone had three cups one was smaller than the ball joint and the other two were larger than the knuckle area around the ball joint. So they would just walk off as we start working the press.

I'll get the new one pressed in and install my new hub/bearing and cv shaft when they come in tomarrow and be back uo and runnin.

I had to borrow a specialty set when I did the ball joints. I had the same problem with the AutoZone set I got: either the cups were too small or too big.
