so i'm taking apart an extra intake i have for powdercoating and bbb. and i noticed some like directional baffles tubes on the intake right before the air goes into the butterflies. what is the purpose of these? can i remove them?

They are there to extend the length of the short runners. If installing BBBs you will need to remove them to get full effect of them.

What he ^ said. They are there to give a little extra length and therefor torque when the air flows through them. Their leading edge is flared out to keep the flow more laminar rather than "giggled" up. If you delete these because you are getting big bore butterflies, you should round over the leading edge of the butterflies for the same reason. Air doesn't go around sharp corners very well. Want proof? Look at every old style filter base that was ever put on top of a carburetor. Every one has a curved leading edge.

Perry,

It's what your son probably showed you in 1908 when he was trying to tell you to give up your horse and buggy... Ya old fart!

back on track about the intake.
SHOs have tuned intakes, long tubes for the lower RPMs, shorter tubes for hi RPMs. You may notice those "horns" are rather similar to the velocity stacks on some race engines. They work great on a stock intake.
Changing the diameter of the butterflies changes the flow characteristics so the horns are no longer "tuned " and thus no longer very effective. Plus they are smaller than the BBBs. As stated, air behaves badly when passing over sharp angles. Thats where the rounded edge comes into play.
