On my 1993 ATX SHO w/167K miles, the steering groans a little on turns first thing in the morning, then kinda goes away. When I bought the car last month, the PS fluid was black as night and was in much need of a full flush. I did the flush and the groan got a little less noticeable but it's still kinda there.

To me, it feels like it steers just fine but people tell me I must have a bad rack, whatever the **** that means. Can someone explain what a bad rack is, and what to expect as it gets worse?

Will keeping the fluid fresh help or is it beyond that?

Thanks.

a good rack is hard to find :naughty:

Anyway, I would check for leaks. But I'm not really sure what would cause that to happen unless fluid isn't getting into the rack from the resivior or something.

A bad rack is well umm, 2 different size outers, and it leaks all over the place, could possibly sag a little without support.

Seriousley though, a bad rack will cause binding, leaking or just have slop in it.

the steering groans a little on turns first thing in the morning,

This sounds like the pump to me, not the rack. Because....

a bad rack will cause binding, leaking or just have slop in it.

A rack will not make noise unless it is caused by something Shotime1979 listed, and if it did make noise, it would not be a groan.

I'll say this too. The passenger side front wheel well of the car was notably hotter than the other three combined when the fluid was bad and after changing the fluid, that seemed to cool off, like down to normal. Not even sure if that's related, but that's where the pump is right?

Is replacing the pump a big deal and is there anything else close by that should be done while in there?
