bad exhaust rasp: Any ideas?

I just installed my STAGE 1 package yesterday and enjoyed testing it out last night/early this morning. However, a few problems have arisen. First, though, I would like to clarify that I have not installed the pulleys. Knowing this, these are the problems that I have had. First off, the rasp is horrible. I assumed that I had an exhaust leak, but after reading other postings on catlless Y pipes, rasp sounds like it is a common problem. I know this is hard to quantify, but how loud should I expect the rasp to be? I have had an exhaust leak before (I got it fixed) and my car isn't as loud as it was then, but it has a nasty rice burner sound right now. The second problem that I have encountered, just this afternoon, is that my car started missing. I installed the chip correctly, I know for sure. It began to miss under accleration. Also, when I started my 91 up the first time this afternoon (it has been VERY humid here in Texas, I might note)i it died. It stareted again after that, but it has been a little rough and off idle. Any ideas? I bought a bottle of Octane Booster that I might add just to protect against detnation. Is this a good idea? Any help would be appreciated. By the way, assuming I can get these minor hicucps nailed (minor I hope) thsi upgrade is definately worth the money.

As far as the rasp issue, I believe many people have replaced the resonator with a "glass pack" muffler or something of the sort. i don't know the results as I haven't had my catless Y installed yet. A "glass pack" is going in also as a piece of mind.

I don't know what the SS y-pipe sounds like without the cats but I have a SS y-pipe with cats and couldn't stand the rasp. To fix it to an acceptable level I have 2 resonators installed. After the flex joint, I have a dynomax resonator (from a dynomax catback system) followed by a Magnaflow resonator after the shifter and topped off by Flowmaster mufflers. I'm happy with the sound for now, but if I ever decided to redo the exhaust I'd probably have a custom bent exhaust installed. My friend just had one done on his 89 and it's very nice. Good luck getting rid of the rasp!

Rasp is a necessary evil of the SHO engine. Especially with a catless y-pipe. One way to help quiet the rasp is getting some turned down tips for the mufflers. aiming them at the ground seems to help quiet the rasp down a bit.

When installing an EPROM chip, you must first disconnect the battery and thoroughly clean the EEC's maintenance port contacts. After reconnecting the battery you must then perform the idle speed reset procedure and take the car for a drive. If this doesn't change the engine misfire, the MAF may be the cause.
