30mm deep socket for the halfshafts, u can rent it at autozone and return it if u want. Loosen the nuts with the tire on the ground, a lot easier.

Not sure about the endlinks though.

Just curious, why are you removing the axle nuts to do a strut R&R?

I was just going by the Chilton. I wasn't sure if they were absolutely necessary to pop the axle out of the spindle to do the strut. Just trying to cover al the bases before I start.

Thanks!

Anyone else on the swaybar endlinks?

Depends on what is already in there.

I've seen at least three variations of how the center shaft is to be retained so the nut can be loosened or tightened. These are a hex hut on the "back" of the shaft (usually around 18-19 mm), a small hex shape on the end of the stud (usually around 8-10 mm), and one that required an Allen Hex into the end of the stud. IIRC, the actual nut is either an 18 or 19 mm.

You'll have to look at what is installed and what you're putting in in order to make certain you have the correct tools.

If you're doingthe struts by removing the springs then putting them back together again, make certain you have your outside spring compressors on there to keep from maiming or killing yourself.

The driver side has the plastic one and is the one thats knocking (pretty sure, either that or the strut REALLY took a dump). It has the 8mm hex bolt shaft with the 19mm or so nut on it. I do remember that from doing the LCA's. Pass side has the metal version with the same hardware. Yep, I got the external spring compressor when Harbor Freight had them on sale a while back for $12 or so. Now just wondering what year for the Windstar links, as it sound like they're better tham the plastic ones.

FWIW, I got a practically new endlink off a 97 Windstar at the U-pull-it today. The aluminum one about round as your thumb with the composite ends. Still had the Ford Service Parts sticker with the F7 part #. Didn't have the $ to get good stuff of the 2 SHO's though..... Tokicos, catback, and thats what I could see on the red one, it was sitting right on the ground....

I did discover that. I had to pop the pass side from the LCA though... Then had a huge battle to reattach it. I actually had to lower the corner subframe bolt almost all the way to get enough clearance. The damn strut rod was hitting the bottom of its hole in the subframe. Talk about mad! The rears come tomorrow! Yippiee! More fun!
