I was planning on putting in the fuel pump in my 89 with the help of my dad and was wondering what the installation time was looking like. Also is $75 a good price for a new radiator. One last question is how long do you think a CV joint will last with a ripped boot? any imput would be greatly appreciated on my behalf.

Yes, $75 for a radiator seems a good price, I paid $167 for mine at NAPA. I would say go for it.

Just did the fuel pump on my '93.
Took me about 5-6 hours though most of that was emptying the fuel tank because it was full.
Besides that it's pretty simple. Oh being in CT you're gonna have those nice rusty bolts too, not much fun. use lots of PBlaster or penetrating fluid on them babies. I was also surprised that those bolts were almost 3" long so it takes a few minutes to back those rusties out.

If the tank is near empty or you can siphon the fuel out quickly, wrestle the bolts off....it would take the hour or so that most guys here say they can do it.

I'd replace the CV boot asap unless you expect to have to replace the whole halfshaft assembly. Is it leaking a lot of grease? If so, the damage may already be done.

It's hard to say about the boot. It depends on how much dirt and water gets up into there. You can get a new boot from Raxles www.raxles.com. Definately as inexpensive a boot as you will get and probably the highest quality to. Talk to Mardi there if you want a better idea about how long the boot will last. And when you replace it, spend a couple extra bucks and put in good grease like Redline CV-2 or Amsoil. Or in a pinch Mobil-1 universal grease.

if i have a 1/4 tank do i still have to siphon the fuel out. Also the cv grinds when i turn the wheel but it isn't leaking a lot of grease unlike the radiator which is leaking like a sive. will replacing the boot prolong the life if not will i be able to replace the cv myself or does the job require a lift. two more questions about my sho. would a lot of rear strut noise mean they are shot and does a shaking steering wheel when the brakes applied mean they are bad? burn_out

By grinding do you mean clicking? A grinding noise would be the wheel bearing. The CV joint would click when you turn the wheel. You don't need a lift to replace the CV joint or boot (or wheel bearing for that matter). For a wheel bearing, remove the steering knuckle/hub assembly, get a new wheel bearing at Autozone (about $45) and take it to a machine shop to get the old bearing pressed out and the new bearing pressed in (probably another $45). If your CV joint is making noise it is bad and needs to be replaced. Get a new outer joint and outer boot (may as well replace the inner boot while your at it so get an inner boot too) from Mardi at Raxles (800) 257-8192. You should call him anyways to discuss your options. You'll need some additional tools as well, a 30MM deep socket to remove the hub nut, the torx bit to remove the brake caliper pin, a pair of Oetiker style clamp pliers for the CV joint boots, a needle for your grease gun to inject grease into the nooks and crannies of the CV joints, and rent a slide hammer from Autozone to pull the outer joint off. I always just leave the inner joint housing in the differential because I can never seem to pull the entire half shaft out as a unit. There are tools that attach to the slide hammer that will yank the whole thing out though.

It's kind of intimidating the first time you do it and it's always messy cleaning all the old grease out. There are some good online guides with pics though.

Good Luck!

Yes the brakes are probably bad. Just pull a wheel and take a good look. You should get as much gas out as possible because you may have to maneuver the tank around and unhook stuff. An extra pair of hands will really help. Get a new ring/gasket for the tank too.

If you replace the whole axle as a unit pay Raxles $80 for one. It will outlast the car. You'll be lucky to get 30,000 miles out of the $60 NAPA, Autozone, wherever else commodity axle.

Don't mess with replacing the boot on that CV joint. If there is any contamination you will only seal it in. Those crappy boot replacements don't last long.

Replace the axle and forget about it.
