What would cause the autolamps to not function at times? I haven't noticed any pattern, except that when they DO work they never last my entire commute, which is about forty-five minutes. Most of the time they don't turn on automatically even in almost complete darkness.

Dirty or bad in-dash sensor, or bad switch. Try cleaning the sensor first.

normally, a dirty dash sensor will cause the headlights to be on all the time rather than be intermittent, so that is not likely to be it.

however, the sensor could be bad and sometimes work and sometimes not.

more likely though, is the switch assembly is bad. the good news is that it is the same as any Taurus of the vintage that had autolamps.
