About a year ago, my 93 ATX started loosing fluid FAST. The tranny was so hot that the fluid was smoking. I let it cool down and filled it back up with fluid and drove it home, having to stop to refill once more. Long story short, I found a man-made hole near the front of the tranny that the previous owner said was made for maintanence. This hole is where the fluid is pouring out from, but I know that the real leak is further inside, most likely the torque convertor. The fluid doesn't seem under pressure, but it does come out fast. This all started when the car would stall when i put it in drive. i ended up having to rev it high before i put it in drive. Eventually the problem went away, then the fluid spewing started. A tranny shop quoted me about $2,300 for a rebuild. But I still don't know what the exact problem is. Anyone know of a similar case?

Well 2 bad things about this situation....

1) its a 93 atx, the admitted worst year by Ford

2) Sounds like the guy made a halfassed drain plug and didn't tell you about it. If you indeed have a hole in the torque converter, you are indeed looking at a rebuild. HOWEVER, don't get one done until you get a list of upgrades and changes that should be made to your 93 atx core to help retain it's strength. And most important of all INSTALL A SHIFT KIT!

You also might be able to get some help from the NMSHO club. There are a few active members on here, and they have a yahoo group I would advise joining. Or, if you are close enough to Tx, (I am only 60 miles from NM border) us TX folks would be glad to give you sho advice at any time also.

Good luck with your sho, and once you do the rebuild CORRECTLY you likely won't have to worry about it again for the life of your sho...

Thanks for the advice. I talked to the big Ford dealer here and it'll basically cost me around $2,400 to get a remanned tranny. What gets me about this is that they wanted $600 if I didn't give them my old tranny. Since the car is in NY, and I'm in NM, that's kinda hard to do. The plan is the get a tranny sent to NY and have a tranny shop up there do the switch. That same tranny shop in NY wanted at least $1,800 to do a rebuild. I think the way to go is to get a used one and install that. I'd like to spend astronomical amounts of money on this car that I love so much, but I don't have that kind of dough.
