you do NOT need to remove the pulley. i do recommend removing the battery tray and battery for ease of sticking your hands in there. but i was easily able to get mine out without removing any pulleys. may take a little straining but you can do it. a big handled 3/4 inch ratchet will aid you greatly.
something else to think about though is are you running a stock or aftermarket stereo? if youre running aftermarket are you running amp wires by any speaker wires? that would certainly give you interference in the speakers and it would spare you from having to replace your alternator.
it seems unlikely that the alternator would be the cause of this problem, but its not impossible by any means. let us know how it goes.
