Aarrgh! This past year has not been king to me in the area of automobiles. I totaled one of my SHO's on a cow, did 2k worth of damage with another SHO vs a deer, did 3k worth of damage to my bro's 01 F-150 with a deer, blew my engine at Hallet during the SHO Convention, and now I think my latest aquisition has some serious problems!
I bought the car knowing that it was not right. The guy was selling it because he thought it had a rod knocking. I did not think so. Come to find out the noise was a misplaced shim. The cam lobe was hitting directly on the bucket (OUCH!). I fixed that and drove the car to NY (5k miles in two weeks). Ran strong, got great mileage, no oil consumption. But all along, there was this nagging sound. A rattle at lower rpm's, especially with the clutch engaged. I thought maybe it had something to do with the bad cam lobe. I don't think so. I replaced my rod bearings, just for peace of mind, but the sound is still there. It does not make much noise in nuetral, but when under load it makes a rattle until about 4k. Even though trannies are more expensive, I am hoping it has something to do with that (or maybe something simple like the clutch). I fear the worst though. Any ideas? What do bad main or thrust bearings sound like?
