Ok, so the rod bearing were done about 1K ago, thought maybe something went wrong there, but I have pulled them all out and checked them, they all look perfect.

Now I am thinking its a stuck/bent valve, maybe the timing belt tensioner.

I used to only hear it at idle, but now I can hear it well up into 3K RPM then it will vanish or is drown out by the sound of the engine.

Just because I'm paranoid I am going to check the rod bearings again today and see what I find. All of the videos I have found with bad rod bearings/crank cancer sound WAY worse then what I am hearing. Its just a loud ticking sound, doesn't sound like a knock at all.

EDIT:

I have also done the plug wire test, pulled them one at a time, the sound changed with the engine chugging to compensate but none of them made it stop or get worse.

EDIT2:::

Here is the sound of it! Sounds worse today :(

just check your crank pulley and make sure that it is tight! I had a slight ticking and so I assumed it was a the tb tensioner to get in there and find out I was in the very early stages of crank cancer! I have a new timing gear and woodruff key on the way! So glad that I caught it early!

I had the same thing happen.

I changed my RB due to a knock and changed them b4 any damage. Start it up and within 15 minutes I hear this ticking sound from the top end. Came and went, was very wierd. Put some lucas stuff in for the **** of it and it made it quiet down alot. After that it came and went. Mostly when it first started then went away within 1 minute. That was at 135k about. Now I am at 162k and its fine. Haven't heard it in a long time.

I am 90% sure it was a stuck valve in my case. One time I lost a piston while driving. Lasted bout 5 minutes, I rev'd it couple times w/ the hood up thinking this is it....and just as quick as it went it came back. Crappy oil, carbon build up, and it was sitting for 2 years b4 I got it. Idk thats my guess. I dunno weird but it hauls ass still and is my DD.

artifically loud but here mine.

Ya, I was thinking about sea-foaming it and running some injector cleaner.

Maybe I will try some of that lucas stuff too and see what happens.

BTW, timing belts is getting done as soon as I get the parts.

And I will order a new timing gear and woodruff key and do it all at the same time. just to be on the safe side :)

edit:

Just listened to the video, sounds about like that, not as bad, but you said it was artificially loud. Lets how its a valve. :)

I think it is something in the upper end ... broke valve spring OR burnt valve (intake side) OR a shim that has been eaten up. The SHO is running on only 5 cyl.

Can't tell too much more without specific history.

I cant play it. "windows can not open this file"
The butterfly has a connector near it,, come right off the main harness IIRC.

EDIT nvm got it.

Aww that sounds soo familar. The last 5 seconds was exactly like mine. It def top end though . Mine was weird, came and went. Like I said I never messed with it. It was there for seconds, couple minutes max. Haven't heard it in alteast 10k miles. If you dig into let us know wat it was. Its funny that u changed the RB, then this happens. The first start-u was the worst. It lasted 15-20 minutes. Put the lucas stuff in and prayed. Slowly got better but was there sometimes for the next 3000 miles.

Thats running on all 6 too. Its still smooth when it was revved. You can hear, feel, and see when the engine is running on just 5. When it happened to me there was no power and the whole car was vibrating from it being out of balance.

Sounds just like mine a few years back. If the ticking never goes away, it might be the same source I found back in 2005....a bad valve shim. Try listening to it with the ol' mechanics trick...a long screwdriver or hardwood dowel pressed on the cam cover in the vicinity of the noise, and the other end against your ear. When you're close the sound will really pop out. Mine was one of the #5 exhaust shims....ie sounded right in the middle of the frontmost cam cover. luckily the car was just then due for its 180K interval. Sure enough they found one of the #5 exhaust shims badly dished in the center...all the other 23 were perfect. They replaced it and not a tick since. Good Luck.

unplugged the secondaries and no change :(

Probably valve related.

Going to seafoam it and see if that helps any.

put some seafoam in the crank case and the sound has nearly vanished.

So I am pretty sure it has something to do with the valves or lifters. Might just have to completely rip them out and put new ones in. Couldn't hurt :)
