Was checking over my SHO.. and noticed the battery had spilled over. Also.. my keyless module blew up.. so now I have finally realized there is a problem!

So I put a volt meter on the battery while it was running, and its charging at 15.12 and stays there even under load, and when I rev the engine.

Bought an alternator rebuild kit with bearings, regulator, and brushes. Now.. my question is, is it in fact the regulator at fault or more likely the diodes? I currently have the alternator ripped apart.. and plan on cleaning it before it goes back together. Just wondering if I should continue to rebuild or get my money back for the kit and invest in a new alternator?

Anyone also know if the nut that holds the pulley on is right or left hand thread?

TIA!

LoL you poor guy... I been there... back before I had my air tools, I just went to a shop and handed it to them.. they kinda laughed, but he poped it right off for me. :)

You don't have an old belt, and say a handle from a hammer do ya? Make your own strap wrench. ;)

well damn.

The alternator won the battle this time. I had tried to use a rag folded 5x over the pulley with a set of channel locks and still managed to score the pulley a bit.

Going to have to leave the bearings for now. As long as it charges, and will work in my car I am fine. Going to order a new pulley, $11 rock auto, and swap the bearings when I go to change the pulley in a shop next time.

I actually have a 1/2 drive impact gun and a crapload of tools on hand. Just no air compressor!! I live in a small town.. EVERYTHING is closed on sunday.. and Saturday most places close at 4pm. Need the car for work monday.. so will slap this thing back in tomorrow and hope the bearings don't crap out on me in the meantime. Unfortunately no belt on hand, or anything that would be remotely useful in clamping this pulley without destroying it.

Used the search :nut: and discovered failed diodes result in loss of voltage.. so was able to answer my own question there.

I know how the small town thing goes... I grew up in one of those. I wouldn't worry about the pulley so much, it won't hurt anything unless its really sharp or something.

My bearings in my alt have been talking to me for a while.. but its a real faint whine.. almost a mild supercharger sound.. lol I like it.. your bearings *shouldn't* explode on you.

You could start it... leave your negative loose... then after you start it.. take it off the battery... you'll have to hook it up to start it again.. but you won't cook your battery in the mean time.. ;)

Car should run just fine on 15 volts.. lol :)

P.S. Top off your battery with distilled water.. you should be cool.. Good luck.
