Ok , here's the deal, my battery light started to come on in my 92 mtx so I put in alternator from I believe an 89 gen 1 > It all fits perfectly. I go for a test drive and the dash lights up like a Chirstmas tree, battery light, anti lock air bag and the climate control starts acting weird. I get it a back home pop the hood and there the battery is leaking fluid, the alternator is hot as ****. Where did I go wrong? Either the alternator is not matching up or it is bad also, ANY IDEAS?

I'm not positive but i think the only way you can boil the battery acid is if you connect the positive to the negative and vice versa. Atleast thats what happens when you try to jump a car with the positive on the negative, and negative on positive. You sure nothing got crossed over?

I pulled off the battery caps off and let the car run for awhile, the battery light comes on at the same time the battery fluid starts to bubble, I have my sons 92 mtx running to see if the alternator gets warm like this one does. If any one knows whats going on here, let me know

Not sure, Could it be a mismatch? I am told they are all the same alternator but maybe that is not true. I will go buy a volt meter and find out.

I did have a volt meter here, I check it up against the other 92 and they are the same. 22volts Set on DC 50. I am not sure if that is the correct way to read it. I put the contacts on the battery terminals. Is that correct way to test it?

One of the battery walls inside the battery could've corroded away. We studied electrochemical cells in chemistry and sometimes it can happen. Could be worth checking out, put a different battery in and see if you get the same problems.

Ok , change over the battery and still same problem. I am going to take the alternator out my son's 92 and see if that is the problem. Maybe I have 2 bad alternators. Any body else have an idea of what this might be, , chime in!

Problem solved, it was a second bad alternator. I had acquried a motor a couple years ago with 49,000 miles on it. The alternator came with it. The engine came from a 89 SHO which had been totaled. The only thing I can think of is that the car had a massive electrical failure in the crash which tosted the alternator.

Your '89 alternator had a bad regulator. It was over charging the battery. Boiling battery acid is a result of overcharging.

Yeah, the alternator that I put in to see if the a bad alternator was bad. It came out of a totaled 89 so it must have had a massive failiure during the crash. I did find the problem though. The tech who installed the after market alarm/remote start spliced a wire about 3 inches up inside the harness at the alternator. I did not see this until I was ready to replace the plug. He ran it unprotected next to the Left side engine strut and the movement of the engine had wore the wire bare. This would explain why I couldn't get the car to act up unless I was driving it. The light would only come on when shifting 1st 2nd and 3rd. So moral of the story, if you have the same symtoms, look for short in the system somewhere close to the alternator. Along with the light coming on, I found battery acid around the battery. Other than that, everything else worked fine.
