Several days ago, someone posted a message about putting new brushes in their alternator. Is this the same as a rebuild because I am being told that kits for rebuilding these are not availiable. If they are could the person who posted this, may have been SDPATT, please post the source for this kit and the part/s number/s.

Thanks

I only needed to replace the brushes. The part number or kit would depend entirely on the alternator you have in the car. I made three unsuccessful attempts to get the right brushes, but finally figured out I had to go by the part number on the alternator. Mine was the 90A Mitsubishi alternator that had a Ford part number of E9DF-10300-BB and the correct brushes were the Wells FX-68 from AutoZone for $9.99. I didn't see the need to replace the bearings, voltage regulator or rectifier since they were still working as designed. You can visit AutoZone.com to look up the parts you need for the alternator in your car. I don't believe they changed alternators in the MTX until the 93 model year, so yours should have the same as mine. Here is the link to the topic where I wrote up that brush replacement (with pictures).

Juat replacing the brushes is all they usually need.
[email protected] is planning on offering 160 amp alternators for the early SHOs as well as later SHOs.
For the early SHOs he is adapting the later heavy duty alternator.
Cost is about $180.00 for heavy duty hi amp, good amps even at idle.

My experience w/my 90A alt was the opposite. It was still charging, but the bearings had gone bad and it sounded like a turbine running. After checking both tensioners trying to find the problem, I pulled the alt. off and bench checked it at Kragen. Their rebuilt one was ~$110, still working well.

Maybe one of the reasons my orignal alternator's bearings are still smooth and quiet is that I only tension the belt enough to prevent the A/C compressor engagement from chirping the belt. Hey, something has sure helped.
