I have to ask this question to all you who have done or know someone who has done a valve adjustment. I work aT a GM dealership and a Matco tool truck omes every week There. Well a few weeks back I saw a set of tools that looks like it could be used to adjust the valves. I printed the description of it so I could type some of it here to see what you guys think. Well here the article goes:
Shim-Style Valve Adjustment
MST8825--this unique tool has been designed To permit easier valve adjust. on all Nissans and toyotas and other vehicles with overhead camshaft engines using spacer shims for adjustment. In operation, the Tip of the pliers pushes between The spacer shim and the camshaft as The pliers are squeezed closed. This action then moves the shim and it's valve lifter down and away from the camshaft lobe. In the down position, the separate wedge Tool is placed between The valve lifter ledge and The camshaft. This wedge tool then maintains a gap between the shim and the camshaft as the pliers are removed. The space shim can Then be removed through this gap and replaced with one of corret thickness. Set includes both pliers and wedge Tool.
It sure sounds like it would work. Haven't got a price yet but I know it's cheaper than what people on the internet charge to rent theirs out. Imagine, having your own adjustment tools and being able to do others without having to rent some. But if anyone has seen this set of tools or heard about them, reply back so I can buy it because I need an adjusTmenT soon.Thanks.

I have a difficult time believing that those more complicated and non-specific tools could cost less than the custom made set designed for the SHO. The first time I used my tools on my valvetrain at 60,000 miles, they paid me back for their moderate price. Plus, there was no compromise in how they worked.

If you get them, you will have to tell us how much they cost and how well they work. I don't think many others are going to be willing to be the guinea pigs on this one.

That cheap! I thought it was about $300 or $400 to rent the tools plus all the shims. The price from the Matco truck was $37. Not much of a difference.I need an adjustment bad too...

The tools are the cheap part. The high cost of the kit rental is refunded less the parts you actually use. It is cheaper that way because you will have most sizes on hand before you open it up and won't have to pay for the shim sizes that are of no use to your car.

Where can you buy the OTC tools? Specifically the valve adjustment tools. What is the set that keeps selling on ebay for around $300 bucks? Do you need all those tools?

The full rotunda set seems really expensive. OTC will only sell Ford tools direct to customers. Tools for other applications must be purchased through their distributors. You may get the brush off when you call unless you mention that fact.

Whoever wanted to know the number to OTC, it is 1-800-533-6127 or 1-507-455-7000 and their website is OTCtools.com. I'm going to call tomorrow and ask for the tools I need to do the valve adjustment. I hope they don't give me a hard time. Hey Scott, is the valve adjusting tools they have for Toyota and Lexus the same as the ones for the Sho. Both are used on shim type adjustable valves. The above described tool from the Matco truck was for Toyota/Lexus valves.
