but now I am noticing a hollow tapping noise coming from the rear intake manifold. I assume it is some thing with the cams or valves but what? any one have any Ideas what it could be? also can a timing belt and fresh CPS feel like a performance boost on my "good olle broke down" or is it just my imagination.

A new CPS will ensure longer life before it fails, but it won't change the engine's performance. A new, unstretched timing belt on the other hand, can definitely improve the valve timing and power output.

Regarding the valve train noise, did you do anything to the upper end of the engine? You will need to remove the intake and valve covers to inspect and service the valve shims and set the gaps.

so far I haven't touched the top end but I had some belt slipage problems when I was installing the crank bolt. and ran with cams out of time so it may be part of that. top end is the next project!

Definately. My belt was off by a tooth, and when it was corrected, the performance difference was amazing. Just one tooth can really make a big difference.
