Your post leads me to my own kind of wondering: who at SHOforum currently owns the most shims?

I'd have to think that shims being hoarded is a better thing than shims being thrown away.

more rubber, more HP.....
Many, many motorcycle shops have them. Just ask for 29mm valve shims for Yamaha or Kawasaki and the thickness you want. Locally I've been able to find them new for $3.95/each. No worries!

after that statement i bet right now loudsho92 is crying inside.
more so since they lose bussiness on that one charging $5 per shim i think it was. well nothing against them they all charged more the $3.95 a shim

No I am not crying I get them for decent prices. Also I have over a hundred of certain sizes and other only a few.

If you go to Yamaha (which I have) they only come in denominations of 50, not 25 which SHO shims do. Also most places charge $5 per shim and if I can go to a junkyard and get them for free I do pretty good.

To have these made a machine shop would be expensive due to the tolerances (very tight) and the harness of the material would make them cost more then $5 a shim.

If I rememeber right, arent the new Yamaha shims actually made out of a harder material? I think i remember hearing such a thing about that, and how it was actually a harder material than the cam lobes... which means... your cams will wear out, and not the shim. I think I would rather have a real SHO shim, than the others.... just my $0.02

The last inventory had me at about 1000 shims. "Hello, my name is Gary and I hoard Yamaha SHO valve shims."

My comments about shim and cam lobe metallurgy from a thread in 2006.

Your $0.02 is worth exactly, two cents...

I was thinking about making shims since my dad owns a precision grinding shop and can get WELL within the specs needed but i wasnt sure if it was possible

Show me the difference between stock shims, and "new' yamaha shims. And thanks for being a smart ... guy. You didnt address my statement about those at all. Maybe the cams aren't as hard as the shims, but I do remember someone telling me the origional shims were softer than new ones from yamaha. I just emailed Yamaha, and I'll see what they say about the hardness difference between the two shims. Put me up another link, until then, the penny for your thoughts, still leaves me with $0.01.

Did you read the post I linked? It doesn't matter how hard the shims are, the cams can never achieve the shim hardness, it ain't metallurgically posssible.

I've been doing this SHO thing for about 18 years now, and I've had cams and shims to a testing lab for hardness testing. Would you care to show me your data?

You know, I really don't need to be here helping you or anyone else, I have way too damn much to do to be wasting time on folks with an attitude. Last I checked, I had two engineering degrees, 25 years in the semiconductor and auto industries, and I've been wrenching on cars since well before you were born. Do a little research and you might discover that I was on the EEC-IV and V ASIC design and test development teams at Ford Microelectronics in the 1990's.

Attitide that Eric...

All i was saying is that one might be harder than the other, you just never addressed that, and you started the attitude with the 2 cents thing. Sorry if i'm not a push over, but I'm not the type to get bullied by someone. I read every last bit of it, yes, and I beleive you when you say the shims are harder than the cams, but you never said anything about the difference between the two shims. I bought my first SHO back in 95, I've been around for a little while too. Not saying you dont know what your talking about, I'm just asking for more information thats all. I know some people that actually work in a metaluragy lab at Navistar International, and if I had a shim of each I'd have them check. I'm just trying to see which is the softer of the two. I would rather have a softer one, so it wouldnt wear out the cam lobes as fast. There are no stupid questions, all I'm trying to do is ask a question, not question your knowledge. Sorry for any confusion. I'll go sit in the corner now.
