Stupid question but needs to be asked. Was the key set to "on" when you tested the accessories wire?

Do you have a test light handy?

Did you also bypassed the amp (located in the trunk)?

You dont have the bypass the amp when using the black rectangle connector in the dash for speakers, you just unplug the amp in the back, cause its no longer used, or needed.

Not getting any power, did you check ur fuses in the fuse box that correspond with the radio. If Im not mistaken I believe that wire runs to the fuse box.

Hum did you dissconnect all the wiring to the amp in back? My only guess would be that or something internal with the radio itself.

I dont know but I think it was Jelloslug said the speakers are dual wired so not just the factory speaker wiring runs to them but the wiring from the amps goes to them also.

ok, listen very carefully. Open the trunk, look at the amps on the wall of the trunk, and DISCONNECT EVERYTHING. What's happening is that your stock amp is receiving the (already amped) signal from the head unit, amplifying it more, and sending it back to the head unit. This blows your head unit up.

Ask me how I know this . I went through 6 10-amp fuses before I figured it out. With mine, as soon as I turned it on, my speakers would go "wheeeeeeeeeeee" like a camera flash was charging up, then *pop*, the fuse would blow.

As soon as I disconnected the amps, it worked fine, and it's worked ever since then. :thumb:

What kind of headunit is it?

I ran a Panasonic headunit in a JBL equipped SHO with the factory amps in play for a good year before I started upgrading further and I never had a problem...but I guess that isn't the case with everyone. Since he's already using the secondary plug that bypasses the amps, does leaving the amps in the trunk plugged in still cause problems?

I don't think you're supposed to use the black rectangular connector for your speakers, I think your supposed to use the square one that should be stuffed back there somewhere. Then I also grab an amp bypass cable and pull the rest of the crap out of the trunk.

i had also bought a wiring harness from best buy and the harness you buy there is cheap and the black harness has prongs inside that bend and short the speakers out that is what was causing my headunit to get real hot on the back but i never ran it long enough like that to see if the fuse would blow disconnect your wiring harness and check to see if the connections inside are bent

No you dont need the amp bypass when you bypass the amp like you did with the connector for the speakers in the dash.

so u know i hand wired all mine in my 89 also and the factory amp is still on it works fine with my deck i put pioneer 6 x 9's in the rear they sound great .

not sure why everybody tries to bypass the amp it seems better with it on then off. although its alot louder in the rear than front and any volume level above 10 is too much for em. good luck to ya

everyone bypasses the amps, because coming from a headunit, the signal is already amplified.. and amplifying an already amplified signal isnt the best idea... you do lose some audio quality... some claim they dont, but you sure dont gain any... plus since the "bypass" wiring is already there, its just easier to take the amps out completely and plug into the regular taurus wiring
