*UPDATE*...hard knocks and ticks

Well I am trying to bring back a 93ATX and the intake was removed for a year or so because it had an oil leak in the plug wells and the owner didn't know how to put it back together. He also said that the motor ran low on oil that wasn't changed for a looong time. However, the inside looks pretty good, top and bottom, and has new gaskets now.

However, I put her all back together and gave it a start. The motor started up, but there was a loud knocking and ticking at the same time, that calmed down after 10 seconds or so.

After that, I cracked the bottom end open to check the rod bearings. However, they look better than all my other SHO's that I changed. No bottoms show copper, nor do a couple of the tops, but the other tops show a little copper.

So with that said, what can be all the possible causes of the hard knocking, soft knocking, and hard ticking? The cam chain tensioner in the front was loose, but I cleaned it up and now it's tight, so the chains seem to be in order.

Also, I replaced the spark plugs, but not the wires at the time(still 93 OEM installed). Plus, the steering rack is BAD because it makes a gawd awful noise when you turn the steering wheel, nothing related to bushings or tie rod ends.

I was just wondering what all could be causes; the minor wear bearings, bad rack, or spark plug wires not firing enough power?

Any response will be helpful. I'm just trying to get this thing going, but don't want to replace the bearings, if that's not the only cause. Don't get me wrong, but I'll change those bearings in a heartbeat. I just want to know all of the possibilities I am looking at to fix.

Since it was sitting for a year, I'm assuming a dry start might've damaged something on the bottom end.

Like what?

I had my other 93 start dry, after 2.5 years, and it was okay, but who knows.

I have started to think about the timing belt, but would that really cause my symptoms?

Well, I guessed right a long time ago.......the timing belt has over an inch of play!

I found this out today, after receiving my rod bearings and installing them. I was going to bolt everything up and pull out the stethascope(sp?), but I decided why not go ahead and replace the bearings....so I had a delay in time.

The old bearings looked to be okay, not anything to worry about, but I was determined this motor was going to be brought back and I had plans to replace the bearings anyway.

After the bearing replacements, I still had the crazy noises, so I pulled out the "doctor gear". This made for the removal of the upper timing belt cover and discovery! :salute:

Hope this helps someone in future forum searches! :thumb:

Edit: I also had difficult starting on occasions.
