Join the club, mine has been on for 5 years, and the black tape is not hiding it well enough.
I understand that while it is flashing, the airbag will not fire..... .which to me is a good thing. The early airbags had issues with too much force and injuring people, but it may not be a Taurus thing.
My lights indicate a bad ground, but I have never been able to fix it.

Quick hijack here- I know this thread is old. The air bag light flashed at me yesterday and I THINK the code was a 4 2 but I'm not 100% sure.

I know probably changing the module but I'm curious to know what that specific code might be.

I walked away from a 50mph head on in my 91. Keep the bag working.

Or not, its up to you.. lol They say a 30 mph accident is like falling from a 3 story building, and landing on your dash / steering wheel.

I've always wondered whether the seatbelts in an airbag equiped car work the same as a non airbag car. Specifically, if you have an airbag will the seatbelt give you some slack initially in an accident before the airbag deploys to ease you into the airbag?

It seems so on airbag equiped cars that i've seen crash tests from, where as a non airbag car would have seatbelts that just hold you in the seat with no slack so you don't go into the steering wheel.

Our vintage cars did not have pre-tensioners on the seat belts, so there is usually slack on the belts because people don't wear them tight. Current cars have pre-tensioners on the seat belts to snug up the belt in that .2 seconds before your body slams into it.

42=LH Primary Crash Sensor Feed/Return Circuit Open.

Fix the short before you replace the module or you will keep destroying the thermal fuse and will have to keep replacing modules.

If the sensor is the culprit you can replace with a used good one from any similar generation Taurus and I think I used one from a Lincoln for my GenI way back. The point is that Ford had alot of overlap in system design and components that should swap over.

Thanks guys but it's a 44...I was pretty sure I hadn't seen it all the first time. I've got a list of codes now! (Thanks Babs)

So it's the crash sensor 1 isn't properly mounted.

Code 42 is the center radiator primary crash sensor feed/return open. Usually one of the three wires running from the crash sensor to the diagnostic monitor is damaged.
