I want to run 2 12" Perfects. Now these are somepower hungry beasts, and I am drawn between using 2 500watt Mono amps or getting a 2 channel and running that to them. Any suggestions on set up or even on type of amp to use ?

Just get one good mono sub amp (Xtant A or X series, high end RF, MTX, etc) with about 400 watts RMS and run both of them in a parallel circuit. They'll be louder and run cooler because there's less resistance.

Hey Shawn... I'm a MA_Audio dealer. I carry a M1280i amp that might fit your needs. Here are the specs: 2-channel; 2 x 300 watts RMS; 2 x 600 watts maximum power; Signal to noise ratio 95 Db; ½/3 channel operational (mixed mono); Dimensions: 9-7/8" (W) x 2" (H) x 23-1/2" (L)

If you want power .... this is the amp for you. It will pwr those speakers with ease. Its the same one that is in my car that powers a 2 12" bandpass by the same company. It lists for $499 but i'll give it to you for $399 shipped. AND for a extra $20 bucks i'll give you a AMP install kit. Includes: 8 awg Crystal Blue Power wire (17 ft.); 8 awg Striking Silver Ground Wire; FHAGU1 Fuse Holder w/ 40 amp fuse; Remote turn on lead; ring Terminals; Spade Lug; Connectors, Cable Ties, Grommet, Split Loom, Strike LSIC5 RCA Interconnect cable (16 Ft.)

i personally like autotek amps, they are pricey, but damn they are CLEAR and they POUND. the mx1300 puts out 1600watts rms at 1ohm. over 3200 watts max. its a nice smoked chrome color too. there is one on ebay right now for 700, they retail for i think 1600, you can get the for 1200 if you can find someone who stocks them. don't bid on the one on ebay thats cheaper tho, i have the high bid still
biggrin.gif
oh, they have smaller ones too, thats just a nice piece of equipment. they have one thats 1200 rms that is a "stealth amp" it flush mounts and only sticks out about an inch, thats all shiny chrome. it sinks into whatever you mount about 2-3" those are on ebay all the time for a few hundred. the mx1300 is a class a amp, the 1200watt stealth amp is a class d amp

What would be the advantage of having a Class A amp vs. a Class D amp to power the subs?? I could see why you want a class A amp to power the speakers, for clarity and sound quality, but why would you want it to power the subs??

94shoboy - where do you do you're research information to find out the different classifications of the amps???

I have the myx thunder1000D and it is bench tested at 1240watts at 2ohms and 12v. You get a certifacate with every mtx amp that shows actual specs. I have it running 2 12" mtx thunder8000 subs and it has plenty of power to run those subs. with a class d mono sub amp you get more power from 12v(car off) then a class AB as it uses the power more efficiently. It also runs very cool so when you have it on extended periods of time you still get very good power. paid around 500 for it and I would highly recomend it for its power and quality to cost. http://cmurdersho.tripod.com

i use the class A to power 2 12" atomic apocolypses for competitions, so i get only the best and most clear equipment i can afford.
i get some of my research from my stereo guy and other people who are sponsored byt the shop and try out different equipment, a good majority of it comes from magazines.
the rebuild process is going good, i have to gopick up some black engine paint today, hopefully have the rest of the intake finished and put back together tomorrow and then i will be waiting for an alternator from cincy. should be running by the end of the week. i don't know if it will be worth the 4-5 months of work, but its going to look and run damn good.

There are no real high power class A amplifiers. Technically they're class AB. Class A amps are about 25% efficient at best and draw full power even at minimum volume. Class AB is about 50% efficient at full power (less at less than full power) and class D is about 60-80% efficient although some claim higher (notice i said claim). Class A is supposed to be the clearest but a true class A would be huge, would suck a lot of juice and wouldn't have the necessary power output. I'd go with a class D amp since the human ear is terrible at hearing small difference. You can't hear the difference between a class D and an AB or A.

Rockford Fosgate makes a class BD amplifier as they call it but it really is just a variation on a class D. I personally like the MTX amps and DEI amps.

AS for info try these sites: www.mobileaudio.com/rac-faq

The newsgroup rec.audio.car and the forums at sounddomain.com and carsound.com are good too.

i know that i can't hear the difference, but the mic on my dash can when i am at a comp. i don't care about what it sounds like after a point, i can pump 8000watts max through it on a blurp machine, do you think i need that, **** no, its all for trophies.
