hello guys,

this is my first post here, but i have been lurking for a while. i am going to need some expert opinions and advice on some SHO issues.

i am swapping a 91 3.0 MTX into a porsche 914 for the GRM $2006 challenge. I am using the entire cradle, including the enigne/trans/suspension. it fits remarkable well in the porsche, just pushing from the back now. just like the SHOGUN. i have the alot of work to do in the next 5 weeks, but i am confident it can be done.

first, how difficult is it going to be to get the stock engine management system working on it's own. I have already completed a succesfull ford 2.3T swap into a 71 opel gt. the wiring was not fun, but doable. am i going to run into any major problems? is there a best way to tackle this? it seems like it should be straight forward since the engine harness plugs right into the ecu. is there a ecu that is better than another?

second, i am using the entire engine cradle, and have it mounted in the 914 already. i plan on using the sho shifter. i have heard that shifter cables are hard to find/replace. i have good stock ones, but i need to run them to the front of the engine into the cockpit. maybe 5-6 feet long. does anyone already make custom cables for the SHO (with the proper ends)

third, will be suspension issues that need to be addressed at a later date. all ideas welcome.

sorry for the number of questions, any and all advice is welcomed.

i am looking forward to showing off an SHO at the challenge. i will post progress pics this week...

thank you,

jon

just use the entire harness and computer. You shouldn't have a problem. it should work fine as long as you don't remove a bunch of things. The stock ECU will be fine for what you need.

I don't know the answer to the shifter cable question...

I have an idea for the suspension though.
Instead of using the rack and pinion steering that is currently attached, you could build some sort of rack/bar/rod(with rod ends or something) that attaches the 2 knuckles to the subframe. That's all I can think of, but Someone else might have a better idea for you.

I have some friends that run in the GRM challenges and they drive Neons. They do pretty good. I think Levi got 3rd or something last year. Not 100% on that though. It's cool to have a SHO represent in that though. Even if it is in a Porsche body. :thumb:

i second that you take all the wiring from underhood and use the stock computer as it will be the least amount of problems.
im suprised you didnt get a 3.2 and mounted it to the mtx for the swap.
most people do that when they are swapping

The SHO motor/drivetrain/subframe are, as I'm sure you know, quite a bit heavier and stronger than the stock four cylinders. Since 914s are notoriously noodly chassis-wise, you might want to look closely at chassis stiffness and integrity around the mounting points, and especially for the rear suspension. It may not wind up being a well-handling car, or at least not as nice as it was, but with some tuning could likely be pretty good.

Just getting it running with the stock motor and computer shouldn't be that difficult, at least compared to getting the suspension and mounting done well. The X2J revision computer for the EEC is generally regarded as the most desirable. No problem using the 3.0 with a stock 'puter over the 3.2, especially if the motor you have is reasonably strong.
