...and 65 miles into my 90 mile drive home I hear this sound from under the car and the RPM's rev a little, like the clutch slipped or was pressed in. Knowing the problems with these cars I should have stopped right there, but ignorantly I kept going. Approx 5 miles later I hear the same sound and the RPM's rise again but the transmission does not re-engage. I pull over immediately and call a tow truck.

Here's where I'm left. With the clutch pressed I can start the car. I place the shifter in what should be neutral and when I let out the clutch it stalls. I try starting in 2nd gear and it stalls. I have read all over the forum and from what I can make of it it's my TOB. Can anyone else think of something else it might be? I guess I need a new clutch too?

If the car stalls in neutral, doesn't that mean the tranny's stuck in gear? Can you start the car without depressing the clutch pedal?

I assumed as well that the car was stuck in gear because it should only stall that way while in gear. This is why I thought it might be something besides the TOB. I have not tried starting the car without pressing the clutch. I will have to get back to you on that.

I want a plus...I already have a hood!

Your car if I'm not mistaken is suffering from something more than a clutch, I'm afraid. Here's my list of possibles...

The TOB wore THROUGH the fingers and is no longer able to flex the diaphragm(not able to disengage the clutch). The problem with that theory is that you should be able to move through all the gears with the engine off and your foot OFF the clutch (engaged).
Not likely.

Here's my theory...It's good enough to go out with a floorjack and flashlight right now...

The transmission case is cracked where the shifter stabilizer bar is attached. This would allow the shifter handle to move without moving the shift shaft(you would not be able to take the car out of gear...but the handle will still move). This might occur in a LIGHT head on collision(it might be the ONLY damage). All you would need to do is barce yourself with the shifter(during the 5-mile an hour collision) and have bad engine mounts. The engine will rock forward violently and because you are bracing for impact, the shifter stabilizer will be yanked away from the trans. It could be that the seller you just got it from knew about the trans and tried to mend it with JBweld. It might last thruogh a test drive but on the way home...

Go take a look...

hmmmm.... That's an interesting theory. I'm at work now and can't check but I will the minute I can get out of this suit and change into something else.

The shifter in the car will move, and it feels like it engages all but 4th and 5th gears. It does sound a little funny though.

Check the boss on the transmission. If it's broken or the connections are loose it won't allow for proper shifting through all the gears.

Check the connection to the transmission and the shifter. You don't mention whether it's a cable or rod shifter, I'm assuming it's a rod shifter but not all plus cars came with those from the factory contrary to popular belief.

In any case, those are your two places to start. I doubt it's a problem with the internals of the trans or the clutch, but that's said only as a semi-edumacated guess.

Good luck with it and keep us posted.

O.K. I got home at about 2am last night and tried to start the car without the clutch pressed in. No start and I'm assuming that's a good thing because my Gen II won't start that way either.

I have not crawled underneath yet to check the connection to the transmission. I will do that this afternoon.

-It is indeed a rod shifter.

Yep, it's a good thing that it didn't start, that's perfectly normal.

Keep us posted on what you find out.

Sorry, I didn't get the opportunity to get a look at it yet. GF's 00 Maxima is up for emissions inspection and the SES light is on. They won't inspect it with the light on so I had to change the cats and the 02 sensors out. Now that that's done I will take a look at the SHO Plus when I get home from work.

I finally got a look at the tranny this morning. What I saw wasn't good. There was a hole in the tranny case on the passengers side. Not a big one, but sure enough to drain all the fluid and allow me a tiny peak inside. I should have taken a pic while I was underneath but I was running late for the Skins game. Anyone selling an mtx transmission..lol?

Attached some pics of the Sho Plus. She needs a bath though.

I have absolutely no idea what it could be. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Spit out a diff pin.

You will need to buy a junk yard tranny. Ship the JY trans to Bizzy(the owner of this forum). Have her rebuild the junkyard tranny and ship it back to you.

For shipping, figure on a 24"x24"x24" box and 100LBS. She should be able to rebuild it and get it back to you for LESS than a local shop could.

Considering your transmission is STILL good for parts, you might consider removing the broken transmission and sticking all the parts in with the JY tranny. This will likely save you some money since Bizzy will not have to supply parts.

Every time I hear of a diff pin blowing, it is followed by 3 quarts of ATF.
You didn't mention any fluid leakage.

My guess is that the TOB quill sleve has moved, or you have some broken pressure plate fingers.

Funny thing is I did not see any fluid under the car that night. It must have drained completely. I took some pics of the hole in the tranny this morning. They're kind of blurry but there definitely is tranny fluid all over.

So do you think it's a dif pin? I guess I'll get in contact with Bizzy and find myself a used tranny.
