So my dads 98 SHO (61K miles) that will become mine in this coming summer is sitting at the ford dealer while we try to decide what to do. The SHO was taken in for a routine transmission fluid change and the day after getting it back, it started to whine according to my dad. Upon taking it back, the dealer now says it's showing codes for not only the torque converter but also the valve body. My dad says the dealer talked to ford and they have offered to pay for half of the cost and install a rebuilt transmission and put a 36,000 mile, 3 year warrenty on it... half of the cost turns out to be about $1036... good deal or not!?! With the three year warrenty, Im going to feel like driving it like I stole it! :D Any comments or suggestions? I have read all the other tranny posts, and wish I had the know how to do what Kirk Doucette has done with his tranny. Kirk your posts were very imformative by the way! Its just sad to see how crappy the transmissions are in a "super high output" sedan. My dad has babyed the car for its whole existence.

Also the cam issue...
It was great to see some coverage in the Detroit Free Press thats another step in the right direction. Hopefully many people emailed the author and asked him to do a follow up... we owe him! Hopefully this will help to force ford into doing something about the issue... So once the transmission is fixed, my dad has agreed to pay to have the cams welded. On V8SHO.com, there was information about a welder in Warren.... Metro Detroit Area... I was wondering if anyone has had there cams done there or has more information about this...

Thanks in advance for advice/comments/replys,

Kevin

Also, in the article that was in the Detroit Free Press it was stated that "To date, there has been no recall......with ONLY EIGHT...complaints filed with NHTSA...it’s unlikely there will be."

I encourage everyone who has had a cam failure to make sure they pass this information on to the NHTSA and make sure it is filed under the same category as the other cam failures! This way maybe we will be more likely to get a recall from ford.

Kevin, Thats not a bad deal at all. The tranny has ver few problems (1) being the TC did youo get a 1744 code? Converter is fried..

2. the vlave body? I can only guess that the EPC (Electronic Pressure Soloniod) is freaking out because of lack of fluid being moved from the converter. The EPC is a part not normally changed during a tranny rebuild, the part is 84.00 from Ford - make sure they put a new one in anyway!

Un fortuneatly I had a few problem after my rebuild, I broke a welded converter! How I cant tell you, I guess like with anything you can get bad parts. It just so happened to be MINE :)
This last problem with the Whining noise drove me and the tranny guy nuts, I ended up pulling the valve body out to see if I had sticking valves. Now after we founds nothing and I was about to put another 1000 into it for a Billet pump and valve body. The original thought was a cracked filter (always go with original thinking) so we button it back up and it still whines! so we dropped the pan to inspect the filter and could not see anything, but I figures the only thng that you can do in the lower pan is a filter so I said wwhat the heck and did it anyway. needless to say no more whineing.

So it is stressfull but for a 1000 dollars go for it! like I said make sure they replace the EPC..

if you need anything else email me [email protected]

Kirk, I had the P1744 at the convention and made it down to FPS without killing it. Turns out the convertor wasn't farked up too bad. Doug changed the pump drive shaft, bearing and bushing and the problem was fixed. Cost less than $500 even. That could be the problem here too, dealer is too dumb to figure it out though. Still I'd go for the tranny rebuild and make sure the those parts are replaced.
