Yes, it can be done. You're right, the c-clip is a major PITA.

Unbolt the compressor so you can rotate it slightly upwards. I'll let you figure out what needs to be removed first...

I swap out a clutch in about an hour a few weeks ago. The retainer ring can be gotten out easy if you have a pair of right angle retainer ring pliers. I got it out on the 2nd try.

The procedure to change the clutch and coil without removing the compressor has been written up a number of times. As for the snap rings the keys are as follows:

-Get decent heavy duty snap ring pliers.

-When installing use the largest pins that will fit the snap ring. This minimizes twisting when the ring is expanded.

-When putting in the snap ring the portion not expanded by the pliers tends to bend back. If your expand and push in the pliers with one hand and use the fingers of your other hand to push in the ring you should the install ring pretty quickly.

-After you think you've put it in the snap ring run the edge of a screw driver around the ring to make sure it is seated.
