hey guys. i recently had my tranny dump out of my 93 SHO ATX. the tranny was a ford quality rebuild, installed by the dealer in 1999 (previous owner).
i wanted to post my experience. with the information which SHO'd has told me and showed me through a few pictures, i can give you a warning sign of ATX failure forthcoming.
months earlier: different times, not always constant, not always noticably loud, something spinning, sounds like as if a spinning sensor (i thought possibly TSS), that was not lubricated anymore, or was making slight contact with something.
i heard this when i stuck my head in the drivers side of the engine bay. i was never sure exactly what i was looking for, and just when i decide to look more into it, the noise is gone. this is the big mistake.
coming to the 21st of december last year. the transmission started slipping and then dropping into 2nd gear (only the 1st to 2nd shift). i knew problems were coming but not "that's it, no more go", right away. the 23rd, she didnt want to bring me home from work. it slipped right out of gear when trying to accelerate, and did not come back in when i laid off of the gas, or when i tried to accelerate again. then out of the blue it was back... and then gone again 3 seconds later. i pulled over and checked the fluid. it was right where it was a week or 2 ago when i last checked it, top of the cross hatches, and still a fairly clean red-ish hue. i figured this was it, the damage is already done... makes no sense to just replace whats broken in a tranny... you replace all the parts so you dont have to think about the seasoned veteran /weakest link that you left in there being a cheap bastard...
so i drove it my 50 km hwy drive home. i have CAA but i dont like to bother people for help unless it is really needed. before i went on the highway i found that the car had full engine power once it was in a gear... in between gears (initially getting started moving mainly), was the trouble. i also found that it would not downshift while on the highway...it was locked into 4th. torque converter dropped the rpms by 500 or so as normal when cruising constant. no problem whatsoever keeping the speed.
so i got a parts car, and gave the bad tranny to Mike (SHO'd) for a few bottles of 'mental anguish reliever' AKA beer. he proceeded to pull it apart and get to work rebuilding it. he sent me a few pics and a description of what he found.

the diff pin had been working its way out. that sound as i described earlier is most likely the sound of the fluid pump. i'm hoping Mike will chime in with a pic of that pump maybe. my guess is that tranny case shavings from the diff pin going around may have damaged, and or clogged the pump, stopping it... causing over heating of the tranny. the transmission pan has a magnet, however the case is aluminum...
