Guys and Gals,

I have been reading and seeing alot of issues going down with the PTU in the AWD GEN4 SHOs...Please take a piece of advice from a GEN1 guy.....BUY an extra PTU right now and mothball it! I can see the same pattern emerging with the GEN4's as the GEN1 and Gen 2 MTX transmissions....Ford is already not wanting to service the units and i can guaranty that it will end up in the same situation as the MTX....they will not produce anymore of them and once again leave all the SHO owners hanging and fighting for parts!

Just a suggestion...but look at the trends and you will see> Best of luck to you guys and I hope I'm wrong! :(

Good point, although there are a few differences here. First, all the Police Interceptors. Second, all the Explorers and Police Interceptor Utility vehicles ;)

But you're right - it is a good idea...

I do agree with that 100%, but keep in mind that most Law Enforcement agencies change out vehicles on the regular so keeping vehicles in the fleets using a failing PTU might be a very short term thing....just food for thought.

I am under warranty until Feb. 2024. But, not a bad idea if out of warranty and up there in miles. Best bit of advice is change the fluid religiously. It is just gears in a gear box. As long as it is running in fresh fluid it should last a good while.

I think it's worth noting that the PTU is available on a lot of vehicles. Unlike the Gen1 SHOs where most things were custom for that specific low production volume vehicle, these PTUs are pretty high production once you see all the other vehicles they can be pulled from. Like everything, they will eventually go away and not be easy to find. So if you plan on keeping your SHO for another 15-20+ years then it would be a good idea to buy another PTU. But if one's not planning to keep their car for a couple decades, I imagine they will still be pretty easy to find.

I think only a very small percentage of people (including people on this forum) have any desire to keep their SHO for very long. I doubt many people plan to keep it long enough where they need to stock up on critical parts.

Well then logic would dictate that the people you are referring to would not worry about it then.....its not rocket science.

My extended warranty is good to Feb. 2023. I assume the those buying the 2019 SHO will have the option to buy a 7 year extended warranty which means Ford will need to keep parts available until at least 2027. Frankly, I don't see an issue until maybe the early 2030s at the earliest.
