OK people, I have done my due diligence and searched and found answers that seem to dance around my problem so now I'm sending it out to all of you great informants. The SHO (95 atx) normally runs great but lately when trying to start I show no RPMs and engine won't go. It starts to turn over then quits. After several tries it will eventually start but still no tach signal. In other words as long as the tach is getting a signal and showing rpms' the car starts 1st time no problem, when signal is lost for whatever reason, it's very hard to start. It will drive ok without tach input.
Ran codes and received the usual 326, 212, and 214. However 212 & 214 only come in when I'm showing 0 rpms'. Anybody have this problem?

I'd check and made sure that your DIS is fully grounded, if that is grounded fine, your culprits are your cam sensor and your crank sensor.

Cam sensor (CID) needs replacing.

This is what was exactly what was wrong with my 93 ATX. Your computer has a 1 in 3 chance (I think) of sparking at the right time when the CID isnt working. This is why when you re-try, it eventually works, but still with no tach.

Like 40 bucks at Autozone...fairly easy to replace.

Thanks for the quick response. I will change the cid but am having trouble seeing the correlation between it and the tach. Anybody?

The computer uses a combination of the CPS and CID signal to configure the tach. If one is not working correctly that will cause problems with the tach, or lack thereof.

you really should use brand new parts... particularly on the CPS if you dont want to dig back down there again soon.

it is common practice for knowledgeable SHO people to swap out the CPS (even if still good) every 60-90 k miles when you do the front 60k service. its good insurance, because its a guessing game when it could go out anytime after that...
