Okay, looking from the front of the car, the CV shaft starts from the wheel/boot and then right next to the steering shaft it has another boot and a joint, and then it moves on into the tranny. Is that joint next to the steering shaft the "inner joint" and the ones near the tires the "outer joints"? I have to reassemble mine, and I'm slightly confuzzled.

Thanks!

Yes.

You can buy a remanufactured CV shaft for each side of the car for about $60 each with a lifetime warranty. As easy as they are to replace as a unit, I wouldn't even think of messing with rebuilding them myself. My originals lasted 285,000 miles before making any noticeable ticking noises.

$60? Where can I get that at?

Would I still have to screw with the inner joint?

The outer joints are at the wheels, the inner joints are at the transmission. The outer joints are "ball and cage" Rzepka joints, the inner joints are spring loaded, tri-pod, needle bearing joints. rangerj

Just a reminder that there is an intermediate shaft on the passenger side.

It goes from the transmission to just outboard of a bearing that is suspended under the rear center of the engine. The passenger side halfshaft fits into the outboard stub of this shaft.

AutoZone, among others, sells the $60 (exchange) remanned halfshaft. There are better ones available, such as from Raxles, however, the AutoZone units are adequate for a daily driver.

here is what it looks like:

I'm not sure I need new outer shafts, because the only reason they are disconnected is because I took the tranny out. However we were kind of vicious when disconnecting the half shaft from the outer shaft (I think that's how it works). The only thing I know that is wrong with the outershaft is one of the smooth metal rings that are on the end of the outer shaft fell off. (there are three of these rings on each one, the other two rings are still secured, but one fell off somehow). Maybe it was broken before but I only found out after I took the boot off. Well, on that note, I guess I should get it.

Okay, so my shopping list should say:

Passenger side outer CV shaft
Driver side outer CV shaft
Half shaft
Inner joint boot and some anchovie (that's what it smells like) grease. I have two boots for each outer joint.

That look right?
